Nickelodeon made the announcement officially on Saturday in a tweet shouting Pride Month (June) and adding pictures of three of their canon characters as a direct sign that they are all part of the LGBTQ+ culture ... But, still, without saying it outright.
"Celebrating # Pride this month and every month, with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies," reads the tweet.
# SpongeBobIsGay began trending as many agreed that the tweet was evidence of the sexuality of the character.
Partly because of his close relationship with best friend Patrick Starfish, the internet had long since decided that SpongeBob was indeed gay.
But the creator of the show, Stephen Hillenburg, in 2005 dismissed speculation over the relationship and sexuality of the characters.
Hillenburg died at age 57 in 2018 from complications caused by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS.
"What we are trying to do has nothing to do with that," People magazine reported as saying, Hillenburg. "We never intended to make them gay. I think they 're almost asexual. We 're just trying to be funny and that has nothing to do with the show."
