The 'Politician of the Year' award is presented to five of the world's most outstanding young politicians between the ages of 18 and 35.
Muar Member of Parliament (MP) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has recently been shortlisted for One Young World's 'Politician of the Year' award.
One Young World, based in the United Kingdom, is the world's largest youth leadership summit.
The event brings together delegates from over 190 countries and is sponsored by prominent humanitarian leaders such as Justin Trudeau, Paul Polman, and Meghan Markle.
They are chosen on the basis of their effect on young people in their communities and countries. In fact, politicians are often the ones that highlight the benefits of including young people in politics.
One Young World cited Syed Saddiq's 'Projek Reben Kuning' initiative as the reason for his selection.
The goal of the campaign is to give young ex-convicts second chances of employment.
Bernama previously stated that when Syed Saddiq was a youth and sports minister in 2019, 24,234 people benefited from the program.
Meanwhile, Phoong Jin Zhe is the only other Malaysian politician to be nominated for the same award.
He was named One Young World in 2019 when he was Sabah 's youngest state assemblyman and youngest state minister of sports and culture.
He was known for championing student autonomy at the university, and he also operated a community center that offered free education for underprivileged children
This year, a total of 15 politicians from all over the world have been chosen for their contributions to local politics.
The shortlisted candidates are currently being reviewed by the One Young World Jury Expert Panel, which will vote on the final five winners.
The winners will be announced in mid-July and will be unveiled at the One Young World Summit 2021 in Munich.
